Bondi Beach lies 7 km east of the CBD: about a kilometer of south-facing sand, with shops along Campbell Parade and the side streets behind it.1 Trams arrived in 1884, and the opening of the pavilion in 1929 drew a crowd of about 200,000.1 Bronte is two beaches south, past Tamarama.

Early starts are more common here than anywhere else in Sydney: Harry's, Shuk Bondi, Coop and Makuto all open at 06:00 on weekdays. North Bondi's cafés sit in residential streets, Campbell Parade's face the water, and Bronte's gather around MacPherson Street and the park above the beach.

Local tip: Iggy's stops at 13:00 and is closed on Mondays, so buy your loaf in the morning and carry it down the hill; Bogey Hole Cafe is by the beach for the coffee.

Hall Street: books and arepas

Gertrude & Alice began with 40,000 second-hand books stockpiled in the houses of its two founders, a bookseller who had worked in Glebe and a former café owner, Katerina, while they waited for premises.2 An old surf shop on Hall Street came free, and they renovated it in under six weeks with help from family and friends; when the lease ended, the shop moved three doors down.2 Broadsheet notes its rare books and says locals call it their "Hotel California".4

Further along the street, Makuto pours specialty coffee beside Caribbean-leaning plates, Venezuelan arepas among them.3

Campbell Parade and the pavilion

Lamrock Cafe is a family business with a sweep of the beach in front of it. Tom and Daniela, locals for more than 30 years, own it, Yaya Zoi (Grandma, in Greek) often lends a hand, and there is live music on Sundays, weather permitting.5

Will & Co Bondi is a roaster's own counter. Three friends, Ro, Sam and Rich, started the company in 2013, looking for a blend to go with their early-morning surfs.6 Its tasting bar pours single-origin pour-overs, batch brew and cold-brew flights.3 Hours are short: Wednesday to Sunday, 06:30–13:30. Glory Days Bondi, inside the restored pavilion, is a licensed all-day diner with a beachfront patio, serving oysters and kingfish ceviche as well as breakfast classics.34

North Bondi's back streets

Harry's, on Wairoa Avenue, has looked after locals since 1997.4 The Depot, on Warners Avenue, is family-run with an in-house bakery and a small dinner service from Wednesday to Friday.3

Two places here draw on Jewish and Israeli cooking. Lox In A Box is a hole-in-the-wall for bagels with cured salmon or salted beef, and also sells house-made egg dip and schmears.4 Shuk Bondi takes its cue from Israel's marketplaces, with family-sized shakshuka and breads baked on site.34

Bondi Road and the Icebergs

At the beach's southern end, The Crabbe Hole is a coffee window at the pool entrance of Bondi Icebergs, with ocean views and a small menu; standard coffees come as double shots.34 The Icebergs swimming club itself dates to 1929.1

Up the hill, Bennett Street Dairy at 73 Bondi Road sells coffee on tap, fresh salads and cookie dough by day, and turns into a wine bar on Thursday to Saturday evenings.34

Bronte: the bogey hole and MacPherson Street

Bogey Hole Cafe opened in 1993, when long-time residents Debra and Richard Gray decided Bronte needed an outdoor café; the family has run shops here since the 1940s.7 It is named after Bronte's rock pool, the bogey hole, where generations of toddlers learned to swim, and it pours Salvador Sydney coffee alongside homemade cakes, jams and sauces.7

Igor and Ludmilla Ivanovic founded their bakery in Boston in 1994 and opened their first Australian shop in Bronte in 2008, on Belgrave Street.8 By 2016 Iggy's was baking its naturally leavened, hearth-baked sourdough in a two-storey building on MacPherson Street, with the family living upstairs.8 It opens 07:00–13:00 and closes on Mondays.
