WLAN, the German word for Wi-Fi, is on offer in cafés all over Cologne. Ehrenfeld has the most cafés with it, ahead of the Belgisches Viertel, the Zülpicher Viertel and the Altstadt, and Deutz has two on a single street, the Deutzer Freiheit.

Outside, the city’s free network hotspot.koeln, run by NetCologne for the city, has more than 2,250 access points, including ten on street lamps along Hohe Straße and Schildergasse. You accept the privacy terms, give no personal data, and get four hours free.1

The same network reaches main roads, KVB tram and bus stops, the RheinEnergie-Stadion and the zoo, and nine municipal museums, and it logs about 40,000 sessions a day.1

Local tip: If a café’s network is slow, hotspot.koeln also covers KVB stops and main roads; after four hours you can simply log in again.1

Where these cafés are: Ehrenfeld (5), Belgisches Viertel (3), Zülpicher Viertel (3), Altstadt (3), Deutz & Poll (3), Nippes (2), Südstadt (2), Mülheim (2), Agnesviertel & Eigelstein (1).

Café Franck at Eichendorffstraße 30 was a Konditorei run from 1938 by “Susi” Franck and her husband; she still stood behind the cake counter in her nineties, and Daniel and Annette Vollmer revived the café from 2004.5 The cakes now include a gooseberry meringue cake and a vegan courgette cake.4 It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–19:00.

For café owners

Your café deserves better than a pin someone else dropped

Free listings are free for good. A featured page gives you photos, a menu and your own URL, in your café's own design, for less than a coffee a day.
