This stretch of western Tokyo follows the JR Chūō line through Nakano, Kōenji, Asagaya and Ogikubo. Kōenji takes its name from a Sōtō Zen temple where the shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu often stopped on falconry trips; the village adopted the temple's name in the Shōhō era (1644–1648).1 Around the station today you find secondhand clothing, small live houses and shops aimed at young customers.1

Coffee here follows the same tracks: kissaten (喫茶店, old-style coffee houses) on Kōenji's covered shopping streets, small roasters north of the station, a café inside a manga mall in Nakano, and a room of classical records in Ogikubo.

Local tip: On weekends and holidays, take the Chūō-Sōbu local to reach Kōenji or Asagaya, because Chūō rapid trains don't stop there.17

Pal, Look and the quiet rooms of Kōenji

South of the station, 七つ森 (Nanatsumori) stands at the Shin-Kōenji-dōri crossing, at 2-20-20 Kōenji-minami. It was founded in 1978 in what is reported to be a converted row house, with velour chairs, old clocks and a chandelier. The name comes from a Miyazawa Kenji poetry collection, and owls drawn on the menus and matchboxes nod to him too. Walk about ten minutes from JR Kōenji along Pal shopping street, or straight up Look shopping street from Shin-Kōenji on the Marunouchi line.2

Just off Pal, アール座 読書館 (R-za Dokushokan) is a second-floor reading room at 3-57-6 Kōenji-minami where almost no voices can be heard. Each seat has a theme: one faces a tropical fish tank, another hides a small mineral collection in its desk, and a drawer may hold a diorama by the owner.3 It opens 12:00–21:30, Tuesday to Sunday.

The dance that began on a shopping street

On 27 August 1957, the youth division of what was then the Kōenji south-exit traders' association ran through the street in white face paint, in an event called the Kōenji Baka Odori ("fools' dance"), hoping to draw shoppers. In 1961 they met a Tokushima dance group in Tokyo and took lessons, and in 1963 the event became the Kōenji Awa Odori.4

It now takes place on the last weekend of August and draws up to a million spectators, so about 500 police and event staff work the route.14

Roasters in Kōenji-kita and beyond

A Japanese coffee site reported in October 2026 that shops focused on high-quality home roasting were multiplying fast in Kōenji.5 Its picks show how narrow they can be. Definitive. Panama Coffee Studio, at 2-3-19 Kōenji-kita, specializes in Panamanian beans and microlots; INCredible COFFEE, in the same 2-chōme, pours a rotating daily coffee from well-known roasters; and MÖWE Coffee Roasters, at 2-10-6, is known for light-roast espresso.5

South of the tracks, Porta Coffee Stand at 3-58-26 Kōenji-minami makes lattes at different roast levels, and City at 3-49-12 roasts to order and keeps evening hours. 珈琲店 長月 (Coffee Shop Nagatsuki), at 3-24-6, goes the other way, with dark roasts, a hand-cranked roaster and flannel drip. SPIEL Coffee, at 2-1-3 Umezato, sorts its beans by aroma.5 焙煎disco茶蔵 is at 3-34-2 Kōenji-kita, and Marushige Coffee Roaster is in Arai.

Nakano Broadway and Sun Mall

From Nakano Station, the glass-roofed, 225 m Sun Mall arcade leads directly to Nakano Broadway, a 13-level complex opened in 1966. The secondhand manga dealer Mandarake has traded there since 1980 and now runs 27 annex shops in the building.6 The artist Takashi Murakami also operates a café, a gallery and a souvenir shop there under the Zingaro name.6

Coffee Zingaro is on the second floor at 5-52-15 Nakano, and 御茶Yucha is in the basement. Nearby, Coffee Stand Ossaion is at 5-54-3 and 喫茶ノーベル at 5-60-7.

Jazz in Asagaya, records in Ogikubo

Asagaya Station opened in 1922 and is about eight minutes from Shinjuku. Its Pearl Center is one of Tokyo's longer covered shopping streets and has held a Tanabata summer festival for over 60 years, usually in early August. In autumn the Jazz Streets festival fills outdoor stages, cafés and other venues; the 2026 edition ran on 30–31 October.7 ジャズカフェ・ミスティー is at 1-35-21 Asagaya-minami.

One stop on, 名曲喫茶ミニヨン (Meikyoku Kissa Mignon) has been playing classical music since 1961 from a second-floor room three minutes from Ogikubo's south exit. It holds over 5,000 records, along with a grand piano and a harpsichord for its concerts.8
