Riga lies on the Gulf of Riga, at the mouth of the Daugava where it meets the Baltic Sea, and had 588,911 inhabitants as of 2026.1 The city was founded in 1201, and its historic centre, noted for Art Nouveau and 19th-century wooden architecture, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.1

Art Nouveau buildings make up roughly one third of all buildings in central Riga, and most went up between 1904 and 1914.2 The streets of that decade, north of the canal from Elizabetes to Tērbatas and Krišjāņa Barona, now hold more cafés than the medieval Old Town.

South of the Old Town, the five pavilions of the Central Market were built from German Zeppelin hangars once used at Vaiņode Air Base; work ran from June 1924 to autumn 1930.3 Winters are cold, with January and February averaging −2.1 °C, while July has a mean daily temperature of 19.3 °C.1

How kafija works in Riga

A kafejnīca is a café or coffeehouse, and a beķereja is a bakery; many places combine the two.45 In a survey of cafés in the three Baltic capitals published in March 2026, an espresso in Riga averaged €2.33, a cappuccino €3.21 and a latte €3.44. Tallinn was the dearest of the three, at €2.87 for an espresso.9

Coffee comes with something baked, often savory. Pīrāgi are crescent-shaped buns of leavened dough, traditionally filled with smoked fatback and onion, and pīrādziņi is the small, everyday form of the word.6 At Mārtiņa beķereja, a small bouillon pīrādziņš and a cinnamon bun each cost €0.75 and coffee torte €18.00 per kg, on its price list in October 2026.7

Riga Black Balsam, the herbal liqueur made from a recipe the Riga apothecary Abraham Kunze created in 1752, contains 24 natural ingredients and is drunk on its own or added to coffee and hot chocolate.8

Tea matters as much as coffee. A common belief holds that Latvians can make tea from almost anything, and the city's tea shops stock infusions of local flowers and grasses next to blends from abroad.10 Tabu and Tējo in the City Centre and Runa Tearoom in the Old Town, all tea rooms, stay open until 22:00 or later.
