Latvian cooking is built on farm produce, with meat in most main dishes and plenty of dairy, including biezpiens (curd cheese).1 Cafés have moved on from that: the national tourism board says most cafés and restaurants in Riga now offer a vegan menu or at least some vegan dishes.2

The Quiet Centre has the most vegan-friendly cafés, about a third of them, with the Old Town and Āgenskalns & Ķīpsala next. Several are lunch rooms with short weekday hours, so check the clock as well as the menu.

Local tip: Many of these kitchens are lunch places: Gardā Pupa closes at 15:00 and Tibetas virtuve at 18:30, so for a vegan dinner go to Mazā Terapija on Baznīcas iela, open until 21:00 every day.

Where these cafés are: Quiet Centre (5), Old Town (3), Āgenskalns & Ķīpsala (3), Maskavas forštate (2), Imanta, Zolitūde & Bolderāja (1), City Centre (1), Torņakalns & Mūkusala (1).
