Āgenskalns lies on the left bank of the Daugava, an older district built mainly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and known for its wooden architecture. The first building on record is the fortified Māra mill, mentioned in 1226; every building burned during the French invasion of Russia, so most date from the first half of the 19th century.1

Ķīpsala, the island on the left bank, is tied to the center and to Pārdaugava by the Shroud Bridge, holds a Riga Technical University campus and had 841 residents in 2024.2 Across both, Nometņu iela has the most cafés, with Kalnciema, Slokas and Meža iela behind it.

Local tip: Go on a Saturday, when the Kalnciema Quarter market is on and KALVE in the Āgenskalns market hall is open until 19:00.5
