Vecrīga, the Old Town, is the medieval core of the city and part of the Historic Centre of Riga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. In the early 1990s its streets were closed to traffic, except for residents and delivery vehicles with permits.1

That makes it a walking quarter, and its cafés sit along Kaļķu, Audēju and Vaļņu iela and in the lanes around Grēcinieku iela. The Old Town has the most cafés with outdoor seating in Riga, and is second only to the City Centre for late openers.

Local tip: For the earliest coffee inside the Old Town, Mārtiņa beķereja at Vaļņu 28 opens at 07:30 on weekdays, before most of the street's shops.

Jēkaba iela and the Ķuze name

St. James's Cathedral, at Jēkaba 9, was dedicated in 1225 and stands directly opposite the House of the Livonian Noble Corporation, where the Saeima, Latvia's parliament, meets.2 Further along, V. Ķuzes kafejnīca at Jēkaba 20/22 opens daily 10:00–22:00.

The café carries the name of Vilhelms Ķuze, a confectioner remembered for his part in Latvia's economy of the 1920s and 1930s; his factory, "V. Ķuze", was not preserved.3 A company carries the name on today and says it continues his tradition.3

Three cafés at Vaļņu 28

Vaļņu 28 holds three of the Old Town's cafés under one address. Mārtiņa beķereja opens 07:30–19:00 on weekdays and 08:00–19:00 at weekends; the company behind it was founded on 20 January 1993, and it sells kliņģeri, pīrādziņi and other sweet and savory buns.48 Goppion Caffe opens at 08:00 on weekdays and 08:30 at weekends, and Šokolādes māja stays open until 21:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Bastejkalns and the canal

Bastejkalns, on the Old Town's eastern edge, replaced bastions, moats and ramparts that were pulled down in the mid-19th century; landscape architect Georg Kuphaldt oversaw much of the work between 1859 and 1887.5 Ducks and swans live on the canal, and in summer river trams and boats leave from a dock beside the park.5

Bastejs and Gulbis share Zigfrīda Annas Meierovica bulvāris 5, on the park side, both with outdoor seating; Bastejs opens 08:30–19:00 on weekdays. KALVE is at number 10 and Cadets de Gascogne at number 8. Mīkla, a vegan-friendly bakery at Aspazijas bulvāris 22, is step-free and opens at 08:30 on weekdays.

Specialty bars and tea rooms

Riga's first Art Nouveau building was completed in 1899 at Audēju 7.6 Big Bad Bagels, at Audēju 10, opens daily 08:00–18:00 with tables outside. Antidote Specialty Coffee is at Grēcinieku 7, and Conta, at Laipu 7, opens at 08:00 from Thursday to Sunday. Strada, at Jāņa 5, roasts its own beans and has a sunny terrace.7
