The City Centre is the grid of 19th-century blocks east of the Old Town canal, running out past the railway station and Stabu iela. Its anchor is the Vērmane Garden, inaugurated with festivities on 8 June 1817 as Wöhrmann Park and the oldest public garden in Riga.1

Tērbatas iela, which runs along the garden's north side, has more cafés than any other street here, with Krišjāņa Barona iela, Stabu, Blaumaņa and Ģertrūdes behind it. The first independents open at 07:30 on weekdays.

Local tip: Tabu, in the Vērmane Garden, pours tea until 00:00 on Friday and Saturday nights; on other evenings Tējo, on Krišjāņa Barona iela, is open until 22:00 every day.
