Haebangchon (해방촌, "liberation village") is the hill below Namsan Tower, settled after 1945 by people returning from abroad and people arriving from the north, then by Korean War refugees.1 The land had been a Japanese army rifle range. Next door, Huam-dong (후암동) grew from Japanese-era housing, and some of those wooden houses still stand.3

Both sides are steep, which shaped the coffee: small shops, few tables, and a local trade rather than a passing one. The columnist Shim Jae-beom wrote in November 2026 that cafés seem to soak into this neighborhood differently, remembering customers by name until they become part of it.2 The Yongsan 02 village bus, from the Hanshin Apartment stop by exit 2 of Noksapyeong station, saves the climb.4

Local tip: Take the Yongsan 02 village bus from near exit 2 of Noksapyeong station up to Haebangchon, walk down through Sinheung Market and finish at El Cafe on Huam-ro, which stays open until 20:30 at weekends.

El Cafe, a legend in a hillside workshop

El Cafe Coffee Roasters at Huam-ro 68 is run by the roaster Yang Jin-ho, whom Shim calls a legend of Korean specialty coffee, and it counts among the country's original specialty shops.25 It has newly settled in an old building on the Huam-dong slope that feels like a half-basement workshop, with gear and beans left out.2

Start with the espresso blends, as Shim advises: try the Classic Blend, the textbook specialty profile, against the Italian Job, thick and heavy.2 The company lists the brewing title at the 2021 Korea Barista Awards and 14 straight years of Blue Ribbon selection.6 It kept 07:30–18:30 on weekdays and 09:00–20:30 at weekends in 2026.2

Orso and the wooden houses of Huam-dong

오르소 Orso, at Duteopbawi-ro 1-gil 107, nearly opened in Haebangchon; the owners lost their first choice of space, walked downhill and found this one by chance.2 Orso is Italian for bear. The espresso is heavy and classic, dark chocolate and roasted nuts, and meant to be stirred with a spoon of raw sugar. Local children call the owners Uncle Teddy and Coffee Auntie.2 It closes on Tuesdays.2

언뎁트 (Eondepteu) at Duteopbawi-ro 13-gil 11 keeps the frame and narrow corridors of a Japanese-era wooden house, which Esquire notes is rare to find intact, and shares it with a small goods shop.3

Sinheung Market and the old coffee workshop

Sinheung Market (신흥시장), running since 1953 as the Haebangchon market, is a tangle of slopes and old buildings where Thai restaurants, workshops and record bars now sit among the butchers.47 오랑오랑 (Orangorang), inside it, was reported in 2018 as a dessert café with excellent tiramisu.8

생활커피 콩밭커피로스터 (Saenghwal Coffee Kongbat Coffee Roaster) goes back further. In 2013 a weekly reported that Kim Seok, a filmmaker who could not live on films, had learned coffee and opened the Kongbat workshop here, with a sewing machine in the shop as a nod to the neighborhood's old knitting trade, and plans for coffee classes with residents.9

Daily Routine and Umoae, down toward Namyeong

At the foot of the hill by Sookmyung Women's University station, 데일리루틴 (Daily Routine) is one of only three businesses left in Namyeong Arcade, a public market built in 1922 for the area's Japanese residents.10 It is a small roaster under a high timber roof, with a roaster along one wall and two tables behind the bar; extra seating is a few steps away.10

umoae, in a building facing the wall of the former US base, is a second shop from a Hapjeong café, a café by day and a bar by evening.10 Its vintage JBL speakers were one of only two pairs in Korea when The Edit visited in 2025, and people bring laptops and notebooks to its long tables.10
