Konkuk University's Seoul campus sits near the Han River, by Konkuk University station on Lines 2 and 7.1 Yoo Seok-chang founded the school in 1931 as the Chosen School of Politics, and today its veterinary and art colleges are the ones it is best known for at this campus.1 The veterinary college matters here, because the neighborhood's best-known roaster is on the walk past it.2

Students set the prices and the habits. In 2024 the campus roaster was selling an americano for ₩3,500, and a very large espresso bar, new by the station in 2022, was already popular with students coming to study.23 Esquire's advice for the noise around the station was simply to turn off into a quiet back lane.3

Local tip: Go to Kaleo on a weekday: it shuts on Sundays and closes at 18:00 on Saturdays. Take the coffee across to the campus and its Ilgam Lake rather than hunting for one of its few seats.

Kaleo, the campus old-timer

칼레오커피로스터스 (Kaleo Coffee Roasters) opened in 2013, and a 2024 guide to campus roasters called it the old-timer of Konkuk, still serving its students and staff after more than a decade.2 Leave by the Sanghuh Gate (상허문), pass the veterinary college and it is at Achasan-ro 291.2 It is built around takeaway and buying beans, so seats are kept to a minimum.2

The house espresso is the Standard Blend, plum and blueberry over almond and chocolate. Ask for the low-acid Permanent Blend or decaf when you order, and note the iced vanilla flat white.2 A latte was ₩4,000 in 2024, and the café has twice received a Blue Ribbon, the Korean restaurant-guide award.2 Hours then were 10:00–19:00 on weekdays and 12:00–18:00 on Saturdays, closed Sundays.2

Espresso and study seats on Neungdong-ro

투또톤토 (Tuttotonto) at Neungdong-ro 125 is about four minutes from exit 3 of Konkuk University station, and its Italian-derived name is explained as meaning a free, many-sided space made of several pieces.3 It roasts its own beans. Long rows of bar seats run either side of a central bar, with bakery goods behind it.3 Esquire pointed solo drinkers to it in 2022, and students were already using it to work.3

Farther up the same road, 보난자커피 군자점 (Bonanza Coffee Gunja) at Neungdong-ro 239-1 is the roastery a 2024 guide suggests for Sejong University students.2 It is one of the specialty roasteries the guide lists by campus, near the far end of this neighborhood.2

Wine bars, picnics and quiet basements

오우 카페앤바 (Ou Cafe Aenba), in the back lanes of Hwayang-dong, is a café by day and a wine bar in the evening, with a kitschy front that Esquire compared to something around Seongsu station.3 Ragù pasta and mushroom-cream gnocchi are the dishes to pair, and you can take food out for a picnic in Children's Grand Park or Seoul Forest.3

South of the station, 40 Days, 공유공간공감카페 (a shared-space café) is in a basement at Jayang-dong 611-32, and presents itself as a place for coffee and unhurried conversation.4 It opened 10:30–20:00 from Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays.4 Wick Coffee Roasters - 윅 커피 로스터스 also roasts specialty coffee in the area, if you want beans to take home.
