Jangchung-dong (장충동) has long been known for its jokbal (족발, braised pig's trotters) alley, and Line 3's Dongguk University station serves it.12 Then the cafés arrived. Harper's Bazaar in 2025 described the route from Dongguk University to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park as a new walking course, along Jangchungdan-ro and lanes that keep the feel of the old city wall.2

The buildings set the style. Old houses and small print-shop blocks have been opened up rather than cleared, so coffee here tends to come with a courtyard, a magnolia or a low doorway instead of a tall glass front.23 Several open early too, for people on their way to work.2

Local tip: Time your walk for spring if you can, since P3r:C Coffee's magnolia is the reason to go. It opens at 09:00 at weekends, an hour after Fritz Jangchung.

Fritz in Jangchung, three houses and a garden

프릳츠 장충 Fritz JangChung at Dongho-ro 24-gil 11 opened in summer 2025 near exit 2 of Dongguk University station.2 Fritz Coffee Company, a leader in Korean specialty coffee, linked several old buildings around a central courtyard here, with stone walls and tall trees.2 Hey Pop counted three one-story houses, each kept close to its original form, so it pays to look around before you pick a table.3

This branch differs from the others in serving food and wine: Harper's Bazaar credits a collaboration with the Mingles chef Kang Min-goo and the importer Vinbro for its brunch, and dishes such as dakgangjeong (닭강정, crisp glazed chicken).2 It opened daily 08:00–20:00 in 2025, with brunch from 11:30.2 Marie Claire compared the tree-ringed yard to a mountain lodge and recommended it for a weekend brunch.4

Affair Coffee and the morning counter

Affair Coffee at Jangchungdan-ro 193-1 is the second branch of a small Seongsu roaster, and it opens at 08:00 on weekdays and 09:00 at weekends for the commute.2 A long bench and a bar table make it comfortable alone, and you can watch your coffee being made.2 It serves filter coffee from its own roast, plus drinks you will not find elsewhere, such as a raspberry latte and a jujube latte, with scones baked each morning.2

SAMI COFFEE on Jong-ro 41-gil is another early start in this district, 08:00–19:00 on weekdays, and it closes on Saturdays.

Converted houses toward Sindang and Yaksu

커피 애락 (Coffee Aerak) at Cheonggu-ro 22-gil 36 stands at the end of a lane, up the hill from exit 3 of Dongdaemun History & Culture Park station.2 It is a worn house with a smart interior, mostly bar seats, and its owner's dedication to his wife shows in the menu, with a coconut oat milk drink called the Love Rather Than Sorrow latte.2 It opens at 08:00 daily, and queues are common.2

P3r:C Coffee at Dongho-ro 20-gil 34-57, in the quiet housing between Yaksu and Dongguk University stations, is known for the magnolia in its back garden.2 A converted family home, it has window bar seats on the first floor and tables in the basement, and Harper's Bazaar singled out its buttery scones.2 In 2025 it opened at 11:00 on weekdays and 09:00 at weekends.2
