Gōtokuji is a Sōtō Zen temple that began as a hermitage in 1480 and became the Ii family's temple in 1633. One account says a cat beckoned Ii Naotaka inside during a thunderstorm, and more than 10,000 cat figures now stand on the grounds.1 Miyanosaka Station on the Setagaya Line is about five minutes away, and Gōtokuji Station on the Odakyu line about ten.1

Around it, two low-rise rail corridors run through Setagaya: the Odakyu line through Gōtokuji, Kyōdō and Chitose-Funabashi, and the Setagaya Line tram through Yamashita, Miyanosaka and Kamimachi. Shimotakaido marks the north end. The coffee here runs from long-established names to roasters with a method to explain.

Local tip: Buy the Ozaki house ticket online before you walk over from Miyanosaka; the tea room requires it, and the house closed on Thursdays as of 2024.3

Tea in a blue house from 1888

旧尾崎テオドラ邸 喫茶室 (the Former Ozaki Theodora Residence tea room) occupies a blue clapboard house built in 1888 and moved to its present site in 1933.3 It is said to have been a gift from the father of Theodora Eiko Ozaki, wife of the politician Ozaki Yukio, when she came to Japan from England.3

The house faced demolition in 2020, until the manga artists Yamashita Kazumi and Sasao Nami started a project to save it.2 It now holds a gallery, a shop and the tea room, where a resident pastry chef makes the sweets.3 Seats need an advance ticket: ¥1,000 for gallery and seat, ¥5,950 with afternoon tea, as of 2024.2

Where Horiguchi Coffee started

堀口珈琲 (Horiguchi Coffee) was founded in Setagaya in May 1990 by Horiguchi Toshihide, who pushed fresh green coffee, deep roasts that showed their origin and freezing beans for storage.4 The shop moved to its present address in Funabashi in 1996, and the company's research institute followed in 2002, along with regular trips to producers.4

It is one minute from Chitose-Funabashi Station, with beans roasted in Yokohama and nine numbered blends in which a higher number means a darker roast.5 As of 2019 this was the only one of its three Tokyo shops with espresso, and the mismatched tables and chairs were the founder's own picks, many made to order.5

Shimotakaido: a 1966 chain and Taiwanese beans

コーヒーハウスぽえむ (Coffee House Poem) dates to 1966 in Asagaya and began franchising in 1971, the first coffee chain in Japan to do so.6 It once had 80 shops and counted 20 in September 2025, each with its own menu.6 The Shimotakaido branch on Akatsutsumi serves the Einspänner, hot dark-roast coffee in a wine glass under whipped cream.7 Beans are roasted in Kōchi in small direct-flame machines.6

Nearby on Akatsutsumi 4-chōme, Meili specializes in Taiwanese coffee, which it describes as mild in acidity and bitterness, and often pairs it with house-made pineapple cake.7 It opened in 2020.7

Low-temperature roasts and soup curry

Chouette Torrefacteur Laboratoire on Miyasaka bases everything on temperature: storage, roast, brewing and the moment you drink.8 It roasts low on its own profiles, logs the data, and sells cheesecake and pudding built to pair with the cup. The shop opens at 07:30 and closes around 17:30, earlier if it sells out on weekends.8

101 世田谷堂 (a soup curry café) opened by Kamimachi in May 2024 as the sister shop of 202 Curry-dō in Shimokitazawa. The owner trained for 13 years in Sapporo, and the gluten-free soup curry comes in spice levels from 1 to 10, and the shop also serves its own roasted coffee.2
