For centuries Belgrade drank finely ground, unfiltered coffee, and espresso drinks were slow to catch on.1 The newer scene grew out of small roasters. The founders of D59B opened their first café, Pržionica, in Dorćol in 2012 and met customers wary of new ways of brewing; 7AM Coffee Roasters roasted for several years before opening its first café, in Vračar, in 2024.1

Vračar has the most specialty bars, ahead of Dorćol, with smaller groups in Zemun, New Belgrade, Voždovac and the streets around Knez Mihailova. Local roasters don’t drop the old habit: Koppa describes itself as a craft roastery for domaća kafa (the home-style boiled coffee), filter and espresso alike.2

Local tip: Buying beans to take home? Melö grinds for filter, moka pot or French press at the same price as whole beans.6

Where these cafés are: Vračar (8), Dorćol (4), Zemun (2), New Belgrade (2), Voždovac (2), Knez Mihailova & Kosančićev Venac (2), Palilula & Tašmajdan (1), Senjak & Dedinje (1).
