New Belgrade was built from scratch on the left bank of the Sava. Youth brigades began work in 1948, and in the first three years some 200,000 high-school pupils, students, workers and engineers from across Yugoslavia took part; the municipality was formed in 1953.1 It was planned in blocks, 72 of them today, and the numbering skips: there are blocks 26 and 28 but no 27.2

Cafés follow the blocks rather than any old center. The long boulevards, Jurija Gagarina above all, then Bulevar Zorana Đinđića and Omladinskih brigada, are lined with kafići at the foot of the housing slabs. South of the Sava, the area also takes in the beach cafés of Ada Ciganlija and Požeška street.

Local tip: On a summer weekend Ada can draw up to 300,000 people, so go early: Ritual Cafe opens at 07:00.4

Kafeterija has several branches here; the one on Pariske komune 13 stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Ciklo Bar on Milentija Popovića 20 and Cvet on Nodilova 1 are smoke-free, a minority in this area.

Ušće and the Danube bank

The Palace of Serbia, built as the Palace of the Federation, opened in 1961 for the first conference of the Non-Aligned countries, and in Friendship Park leaders including Tito, Nasser and Nehru planted the first sycamores.1 The former communist party headquarters opposite Ušće Park was rebuilt and renamed Business Center Ušće; its extension is the largest shopping mall in Belgrade.1

Walkways and bike lanes run along the Danube from the edge of the park to Zemun.1 Block 16 holds the Ušće shopping center and the two Ušće Towers.2

Ada Ciganlija and Požeška

Ada Ciganlija, a former Sava island now joined to the bank, stretches 6 km and belongs to the Čukarica municipality; its lake and beaches draw over 100,000 visitors a day in summer and up to 300,000 at weekends, hence the nickname More Beograda (Belgrade’s Sea).4 In July 2023 its cafés charged 225 RSD for an espresso, 335 RSD for a nes and 495 RSD for an iced coffee.5

Ritual Cafe on Ada opens at 07:00 and stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays; Ceca, Havana, Petica and Na kraj sveta are nearby. On Požeška, Robot at No. 146 is smoke-free and open until 23:00, and Codex at No. 128a until 01:00.
