City rules let a Belgrade café stay open around the clock as long as it isn’t in a residential building. Cafés in residential buildings may open from 06:00 and must close by midnight, or 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and music inside has to stop at 23:00, or midnight at the weekend.1

Most late cafés close at some point between 22:00 and midnight, and the few that run into the small hours are bars as much as cafés. New Belgrade and Vračar have the most late openers. In Skadarlija, Zvezdara and Zemun, about a third of cafés serve until 22:00 or later.

Local tip: Cafés may close on one or more days a week and must post their hours at the main entrance, so check the door before planning a late visit.1

Skadarska after midnight

Skadarska is the exception in the city’s rules: a café on the street, or entered from it, may open at any hour, provided its music is acoustic.1 Hand made at No. 21 opens 10:00–02:00 and stays open until 03:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Red Bar at No. 17 closes at 02:30, and at 03:00 on the same two nights.

Nearby streets have tighter limits. On Cetinjska and Zetska, cafés within 150 m of a home must close at midnight, or 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.1 Kvart on Hilandarska and Beverly cafe on Palmotićeva serve until midnight every day.

When the city limited terrace music in 2021, it left out the three zones tourists visit most: Skadarlija, where only acoustic music is allowed, Ada Ciganlija, and the banks of the Sava and Danube.2

The latest closers

A handful go past 03:00. Šešir bar on Pop Stojanova in Vračar is open 10:00–04:00 every day, and Gusar on Gandijeva in New Belgrade closes at 04:00, or 06:00 from Thursday to Saturday. Krokodil on Nehruova is open 08:00–03:00, and Giardino on Ilije Garašanina serves until 02:00 from Monday to Saturday.

Some cover both ends of the day. 33 on Sterijina opens at 07:00 and closes at midnight, or 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and Bastion on Jurija Gagarina runs 07:00–01:00 daily.

New Belgrade and Vračar streets

In New Belgrade the late cafés line Jurija Gagarina and Bulevar Zorana Đinđića. Contra at Jurija Gagarina 26 opens at 07:30 and closes at midnight, or 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Peti blok on Bulevar Zorana Đinđića and Codex on Požeška are open until 01:00 daily.

Vračar’s late run follows Njegoševa and Vojislava Ilića. Norma at Njegoševa 52 serves until 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, Orion kafe at Vojislava Ilića 13 is open 08:00–01:00 every day, and Démarche on Deligradska closes at 01:00 at the weekend.

Coffee rather than cocktails

For a properly made coffee in the evening, Dusha’s two bars on Radoslava Grujića and Višnjićeva keep going until 23:00, and so does Baristocratia on Njegoševa. Latife coffee roasters on Zmaj Jovina pours until 23:30, and Artist Specialty Coffee in Zemun until 23:00.

D59B on Kralja Petra, which began as Pržionica in 2012, is open until 22:00 and puts DJs on a raised platform at the back every weekend.3 A late café’s terrace can stay open as long as the café, but music on it stops at 22:00 on weeknights and 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.1
