Zemun was its own town until it was incorporated into Belgrade in 1934, and the growth of New Belgrade in the second half of the 20th century joined the two into one built-up area.12 The Treaty of Passarowitz put Zemun in Habsburg hands in 1718, and it returned to Serbian control only on 5 November 1918.1 Under Austria it prospered as a border town and road junction, with a Danube port and a large fishing trade.1

The old core is a string of small squares: Magistratski, Senjski, Veliki, Branka Radičevića, Karađorđev and Masarikov, where an open-air green market trades during the day.2 The cafés cluster on and around Magistratski trg, up on Gardoš hill and along the Danube quay.

Local tip: Start at the Masarikov trg market, where Tri ribara opens at 06:00, then climb to Gardoš for the view; the tower is 36 meters tall.3
