Knez Mihailova is Belgrade’s main pedestrian and shopping street, about a kilometer long, with mansions from the late 1870s; it became the city’s first protected spatial cultural-historical unit in 1964 and a pedestrian zone after the 1987 reconstruction.1 It is the shortest way from Terazije to Kalemegdan park and fortress, and thousands of people walk it every day.1 Its line follows the main street of Roman Singidunum.1
West of it, Kosančićev venac follows an elbow-shaped street about 700 meters from Terazije and was protected in 1971; the area includes the Cathedral, Princess Ljubica’s Residence and the kafana “?”.2 That kafana, at Kralja Petra 6, is in a house built in 1823 and is the oldest one in Belgrade still operating.3
Local tip: Battery on Zeleni venac opens at 06:30 on weekdays and Starbucks on Obilićev venac at 07:00, early enough for a coffee before walking Knez Mihailova to Kalemegdan.
