Before the French drew it into Chợ Lớn province in 1899, this was described as empty land between Sài Gòn and Chợ Lớn.1 District 10 was formally created on July 1, 1969, from parts of Districts 3 and 5, and at 5.7 km² it stayed compact.1 Since July 2025 it has been three wards: Vườn Lài, Diên Hồng and Hòa Hưng.2

The Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Thống Nhất Stadium, Hòa Bình Theatre and the Việt Nam Quốc Tự pagoda are all here.1 Sư Vạn Hạnh has more cafés than any other street, ahead of 3 Tháng 2. The local specialty is hát mộc (acoustic singing), played in small rooms down the alleys around Tô Hiến Thành and Thành Thái.

Local tip: Reserve a table at Phiêu Acoustic Cafe before 18:00 on a band night; sign-ups to sing with the band start at 21:00.4

Hát mộc off 3 Tháng 2 and Tô Hiến Thành

In 2014 VnExpress wrote up a café called Tượng on Thành Thái, the work of an architect-owner who used bamboo, split-reed walls, old bottles and dry leaves to build the room, with singing every night.3 Tượng Cafe Acoustic, at 436B/6 3 Tháng 2, has guest bands each evening and no cover charge; the ground floor suits working.4

Phiêu Acoustic Cafe at 343/6 Tô Hiến Thành is an evening room, open 18:00–22:00, with a different band and style each night.4 From 21:00 you can sign up to sing with them, and it is best to reserve before 18:00.4 VnExpress named two other rooms in 2014: Ráng chiều, off Tô Hiến Thành, which held 20 to 30 people and used no microphones, and Ngẫm on Lê Hồng Phong, with singing from Friday to Sunday.3

Lessons, a piano and a misty forest

Say Acoustic at 60 Trần Minh Quyền doubles as a school, with guitar and ukulele classes, and its live night is Thursday at 20:15.4 Drinks cost more than the local average.4

Cafe Bistro Kingdom at 334 Tô Hiến Thành leaves the playing to you: Tuổi Trẻ wrote it up in May 2024 as a "misty forest", with natural wood and a flower garden set inside an air-conditioned room, and it keeps a piano and a guitar for guests.5 It opened 06:30–22:00 then, and the article suggests it for birthdays, group meetings and business meetings.5

A specialty lab down a Thành Thái alley

Mountain Pearl Roastery has its lab and roastery at 51/2 Thành Thái, where it develops specialty coffee and trains people along the chain, from farm to cup.6 It sells green beans to businesses, morning blends, drip and cold brew and even a 6 kg roasting machine; its Experience Bar is across the river in Thảo Điền.6

For earlier hours, Cà Phê TA, down another Thành Thái alley, opens at 06:00. Cà Phê Xì Gòn Phố, off Sư Vạn Hạnh, pairs baking with hours of 08:30–22:00, and Cư Xá Trà Bánh Cà Phê is an air-conditioned, smoke-free bakery café in the blocks along Hương Giang.
