Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport stands inside old Tân Bình, a flat district of 22.43 km² whose highest natural ground, near the airport, reaches only 8–9 m.1 Late in 2003 part of it was split off to form Tân Phú.1 Since July 2025 what remained has been six wards: Tân Sơn Hòa, Tân Sơn Nhất, Tân Hòa, Bảy Hiền, Tân Bình and Tân Sơn.2

Coffee here falls into three habits: cafés that recreate an older Saigon, gardens tucked behind the main roads, and rooms that stay open through the night. Tân Canh has two of the first kind a few doors apart.

Local tip: Watch for the house number at Cà phê Cõi Riêng: the entrance at 334A Nguyễn Trọng Tuyển is only a narrow alley, and the garden starts past it.3

Old Saigon on Tân Canh and Nguyễn Phúc Chu

Tiệm Cà Phê Cư Xá Tân Bình, at 41–43 Nguyễn Phúc Chu, is done up as 1970s and 1980s Saigon in warm tones and raw wood, and regulars order bạc xỉu (mostly milk, a little coffee) or iced milk coffee, at 25,000–60,000₫ in December 2024.3

On Tân Canh, Cà phê Cõi Xưa at number 55 leans on old brick walls.4 Tiệm cà phê Hiên Cúc Trắng at number 25 is small, with a shaded leafy yard in the style of Đà Lạt, the highland town, and it serves Cầu Đất coffee from the hills there; white chrysanthemums are the running motif and friendly dogs share the space.34

Gardens behind the main roads

The way into Cà phê Cõi Riêng, at 334A Nguyễn Trọng Tuyển, is a narrow alley that opens onto trees, a small fish pond and both outdoor and air-conditioned seats.3 The kitchen does fried rice and beef chow mein, and in December 2024 drinks cost 30,000–70,000₫.3

City Garden Cafe at 9 Trương Công Định goes bigger, with a tall waterfall and an outdoor area on two levels, and charges for it: 60,000–100,000₫, above the local average.3 Kinjo Coffee on Quách Văn Tuấn takes the opposite line, a Japanese-style room with no air-conditioning at all.4

Books, alleys and a piano

Huy Hoàng Books & Coffee on Lê Văn Sỹ is known as a book café, laid out unusually for one.4 Also off Lê Văn Sỹ, dumm.cafe keeps a minimalist room in a quiet alley at 281/60.4 Hạ An Corner on Đồng Xoài mixes Korean style with a touch of Đà Lạt and has a piano.4

A roaster by day, Bàu Cát by night

Seven Coffee Roastery at 197 Phạm Văn Bạch sells phin and espresso coffee made from arabica and robusta picked from Vietnamese growing regions, plus bean and filter-bag coffee to take home.5

After dark, try Bàu Cát. KAI Coffee at number 119 was open around the clock in December 2024, on three levels with a breezy outdoor area, and charged 45,000–70,000₫.3 Ticos Coffee at 145–147 kept going until 03:00, with its upper floors opening only in the evening.3 It also keeps a claw machine and clay painting, and that month gave 20% off to anyone who kept the receipt and returned after two hours.3
