The French renamed this area Thủ Đức in 1868, after its earlier name of Ngãi An.1 At the end of 2020 the old district merged with Districts 2 and 9 into a municipal city of about 211 km², which lasted until July 1, 2025; the land is now run as wards such as Hiệp Bình, Linh Xuân and Tăng Nhơn Phú.12

A campus of Vietnam National University and the Saigon Hi-Tech Park are both here.1 The coffee runs from garden cafés built for studying to riverside terraces, roasteries and late music rooms.

Local tip: For a night of singing along rather than listening, go to BIN Cafe Acoustic Thủ Đức on a weeknight; it opens at 18:00.4

The student café village in Bình Thọ

In November 2004 VnExpress reported on a "student coffee village" in Bình Thọ: more than 30 cafés on Bác Ái, Lê Quý Đôn, Khổng Tử and Hồng Đức, some seating over 800 people, with milk coffee at 5,000–8,000₫.3 The rush came between 19:00 and 21:00, and local rules turned the music down at 22:00; many rooms kept study corners and chess areas.3

Those streets still hold cafés. DOME saigon at 32 Bác Ái keeps a vintage room with handwritten notice boards and is popular for traditional-costume photos, at 24,000–50,000₫ in January 2025.4 Cà Phê Pha Kê at 09 Khổng Tử has an outdoor garden and costs a little more than its neighbors.7 Last Minute at 22 Đường Dân Chủ pairs a spacious garden with an air-conditioned area, and egg coffee is the order, at 30,000–60,000₫ in January 2025.67

Roasting on Chu Mạnh Trinh and Kha Vạn Cân

Monstera Coffee Roastery runs its café and showroom at 06 Chu Mạnh Trinh in Bình Thọ, while the roasting happens at 8Ro Coffee & Roaster in Đắk R'lấp, in the Central Highlands.5 It sells for phin, pour-over, espresso machines and drip bags, and also trains people opening a café of their own.5

Cà Phê Ngôi Nhà Gỗ, on Kha Vạn Cân, is a different proposition: rustic wood, many trees and freshly roasted coffee at 25,000–60,000₫ in January 2025.67

River seats in Hiệp Bình

On Đường Số 9 in Hiệp Bình Chánh, Elysian Coffee sits on the river facing toward Landmark 81, with outdoor and air-conditioned areas, from 45,000₫ in January 2025.4 Tony Riverside Cafe, on the same road, is the budget choice for the same water: pure coffee and fresh fruit drinks at 15,000–30,000₫, with music on some nights.4

Music nights and a koi pond at Linh Trung

BIN Cafe Acoustic Thủ Đức on Đường Số 5 opens at 18:00 for its "Hát với nhau" (sing together) evenings, held five weeknights in a cozy, warmly lit room.4 Tí Tách on Hoàng Diệu 2 takes the louder route, with DJ events and a large screen for football.4 Cafe Vườn Xanh Thủ Đức on Linh Đông has a garden, a private VIP room and regular live music, at 25,000–50,000₫.6

Bamos Coffee at 22/6 Đường Số 7 stays open 24 hours beside a koi pond, with board games, painting and claw machines.4
