Savamala stretches along the right bank of the Sava south of Kalemegdan; the name once covered the whole western slope of the center, but today it mostly means the area along Karađorđeva street.1 The marsh below the slope was drained and filled by 1884 for the Belgrade Main railway station, which opened that year.1
The riverbank south of the station has since been rebuilt as Belgrade Waterfront, a 177-hectare project. Bulevar Vudroa Vilsona (Woodrow Wilson Boulevard) and Belgrade Park opened in November 2019, and Galerija, the region’s largest mall with 93,000 m² of retail space, on 30 October 2020.2
Local tip: Eggz and Brekky stop serving at 16:00 on weekdays, so plan brunch on Bulevar Vudroa Vilsona for the morning; Kafeterija on Hercegovačka, with its Sava view, stays open until 23:00.3

The square in front of the station was laid out from 1892, and Karađorđeva street took its present form in 1904, running from Sava Square and the station to the fortress.1 Large buildings followed along it: the Belgrade Cooperative was finished in 1907 and Hotel Bristol in 1912.1
