Terazije is Belgrade’s designated center: street numbers count from the end of a street closest to it, and the square was declared a protected cultural-historical unit in January 2020.1 Kralja Milana, the city’s main street, runs from here to Slavija, and Nikola Pašić Square links it to Bulevar kralja Aleksandra, the longest street in Belgrade.1
Hotel Moskva opened on the square in January 1908 inside Palace Rossiya, a large Russian investment, and has been a protected building since 1968; 11 springs still run beneath it.2 Its Café Moskva opened in 1974, the year the Moskva šnit was created, a cake of almonds, cherries, pineapple and cream of which the pastry shop now makes 20 tons a year.3
Local tip: Café Moskva’s pastry shop serves its šnit to about 300 people a day, so expect a queue for a table in the afternoon; the cake also comes whole to take away.3
