Skadarlija is Belgrade’s bohemian quarter, often compared with Montmartre, and has been protected by law since 1967; after Kalemegdan it is the city’s second most visited sight.1 Skadarska itself is under 400 meters long and runs from Bulevar despota Stefana to Dušanova street, near the Bajloni open green market.1

In the early 20th century the street had 15 kafanas.1 Tri šešira (Three Hats) opened in 1864 and is the oldest still working in Skadarlija, second in Belgrade only to the kafana “?”.1 It plays tamburica music every evening, carrying on a habit that began in the early 20th century, when kafana owners hired local bands to bring in guests.23

Local tip: Tri šešira seats 80 in its garden and asks for reservations; for a coffee without the music, Artist on Kondina opens at 07:00.2
