Yeldeğirmeni, "windmill", is named for the four mills that Sultan Abdülhamid I had built between 1774 and 1789 to supply flour to the army, palace and public; none of them survives.12 The quarter lies within Rasimpaşa in Kadıköy, much of it a registered urban and historical protected area, with Haydarpaşa Station to the north.13
Apartment blocks arrived early, and the railway brought their tenants. Since 2012 the Mural İstanbul festival has added painted walls every year.2 Karakolhane Caddesi has the most of them, then Duatepe Sokağı, with roasters and breakfast places on the streets behind. On weekends, Yemek.com reports, the coffee-focused places draw crowds.7
