Beşiktaş is a Bosphorus district of about 18 km² on the European shore, facing Üsküdar across the strait; it split from Beyoğlu to become a district of its own in 1930.1 Its historic center is Çarşı, the market quarter in the Sinanpaşa neighborhood, known for cafés, bakeries, meyhanes (taverns) and fish restaurants.1 The name joins beşik (cradle) and taş (stone), though the stories differ on which stone: a relic in a Byzantine church, or beş taş, five mooring pillars built by Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha.1

Students set the evening pace. Galatasaray University and Yıldız Technical University have their main campuses in the district, and bianet's reporters found in January 2020 that students made up most of the crowd once the square picked up around 18:00.16 Daytime coffee runs along Ihlamurdere Caddesi, which has the most cafés, then Şair Nedim Caddesi and Süleyman Seba Caddesi, the road through Akaretler.

Local tip: From about 18:00 the square fills with students; Akaretler, up the slope, draws office workers and an older crowd instead.6
