Acıbadem belongs to Üsküdar and Koşuyolu to Kadıköy, and the two neighborhoods touch on the hills inland from both ferry piers.17 Acıbadem was once meadows, vineyards and groves dotted with the köşks (mansions) of Ottoman palace figures, and it is densely settled today.5 It is known for tree-lined residential streets, cafés and hospitals.7

Koşuyolu means "racing road", and accounts differ on how old the races were: Time Out goes back to a hippodrome used by the people of ancient Chalcedon, another account to early 19th-century games staged by Pehlivan İbrahim Paşa, while CNN Türk dates organized racing to 1900–1920.125 Cafés run along Acıbadem Caddesi, with a smaller group among Koşuyolu's low houses.

Local tip: Ride the M4 to Acıbadem for the avenue's cafés, or start with breakfast at Kirpi Cafe in Koşuyolu and walk on to Validebağ Korusu, part of which lies in the neighborhood.26
