Shin-Ōsaka Station opened on 1 October 1964, about 3 km from Osaka Station, because extending the Shinkansen into the city center posed too many engineering problems.1 It is the western end of the Tōkaidō Shinkansen and the eastern end of the San'yō Shinkansen, and in fiscal 2023 JR Central alone counted about 158,500 passengers a day there.1 The Shinkansen platforms sit on the fourth level, above the JR conventional lines, and the Midōsuji Line subway station opened a week before the Shinkansen, on 24 September 1964.1

The cafés with a clear specialty lie a few blocks beyond the station: south in Nishinakajima, east toward Higashiyodogawa and north in Higashimikuni. One teaches latte art, one roasts for its own counter and one grows beans on its own farm.

Local tip: With an hour before a train, Kissa Aoi is about ten minutes on foot from JR Shin-Ōsaka and two from JR Higashiyodogawa, close enough for one cup.3

Nishinakajima: One Room and its barista classes

One Room Cafe & Coffee Roastery in Nishinakajima dates from 2011, and it added a second base in Tokyo's Kōenji in 2021.2 It roasts its own beans, develops blends for people opening cafés of their own, and sells beans and equipment through an online shop.2

The classes are what set it apart. A latte-art beginner course is open to complete novices, and a three-lesson barista course covers espresso extraction, steamed milk and latte art.2 They have run for more than ten years, and the next month's dates usually go up around the 10th.2 The same team runs a mobile barista service with about 20 to 30 corporate clients a year.2

Higashiyodogawa: Kissa Aoi and its nel drip

喫茶あおい (Kissa Aoi) is about two minutes from JR Higashiyodogawa Station and ten from Shin-Ōsaka, on the first floor of a building in Nishiawaji.3 It is built around coffee it roasts itself, with food and sweets as support, in a room of six counter seats and 14 table seats.3 Its tagline promises a kissaten you would make the trip for over a single cup.3

The shop has also taken its coffee out of the room: it joined the Japan Coffee Festival in Suita in May 2024, and offered nel drip (flannel-filter brewing) at a later festival in the same city.3 It also hosts talks, with events recorded in 2023 and 2024.3 Its site gives both Monday and Tuesday as the regular day off, so check before going.3

Higashimikuni: a Yunnan farm, and hours around the trains

KOUNOU-COFFEE, whose Osaka office is in Higashimikuni, runs its own farm in Yunnan, China, Junma Valley Coffee Estate, and manages every stage from cultivation to sorting, with partner farms in Ethiopia, Panama and Bolivia.45 It also sells an espresso shot, pulled by baristas, for camps and events.4

For hours that fit a train, APPLE HOUSE in Miyahara opens at 07:00 every day, closing at 20:00, or 18:30 on Sundays.

Going the other way, +44cafe serves again from 17:30 until midnight, and 喫茶サボテン (Kissa Saboten) runs until 22:00, or 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
