Wenshan, a name meaning elegant mountains that dates to 1894, is two older towns joined together: Jingmei and Muzha became part of Taipei on July 1, 1968, and merged into one district on March 12, 1990.4 The Jingmei River forms part of its edge with Xindian, National Chengchi University sits inside it, and the Maokong Gondola climbs from Taipei Zoo by way of Zhinan Temple to Maokong.4

Students shape much of the coffee. A 2020 Bella roundup pitched the district's cafés at slow dates and exam revision, and its picks and a 2021 list both kept returning to Muzha Road.23 Expect repurposed buildings: a ruin, a photo studio and a former factory.

Local tip: Ride the Maokong Gondola from Taipei Zoo after a coffee in Muzha; 你後面 and the Muzha Road roastery are both on this side of the district.34

Two rooms from one roaster

廢墟 (Ruins Coffee Roasters) dates to 2016, when owner 洪璽開 spent five months rebuilding a derelict building on Muzha Road Section 3 as a wooden mezzanine, furnished with antique tables, chairs and fans.1 In 2020, Bella found exposed concrete, plants and strong daylight, few seats with the mezzanine filling first, hand-brewed coffee to order and desserts chalked up daily.2 A 2021 list recorded a NT$100–300 drink minimum and NT$150 cakes.3

He has since handed daily service to his staff and spends his days roasting at a factory.1 A second branch opened in 2023 near Wanshou Road and the Jingmei River, inside a National Chengchi University library.1 It serves 10:00–18:00 daily.

Zhinan Road's vintage rooms

老薑咖啡 (Old Ginger Cafe & Vintage) on Zhinan Road Section 3 sits behind a red door, furnished from its owner's vintage collection and known for handmade cake and hot coffee.2 As of 2020 it had no Wi-Fi, and that kept the room quiet.2

小公寓 Apt.cafe, a second-floor room on Zhinan Road Section 2, is where students were often found studying in 2020, among warm yellow lights, retro sofas and wallpaper, with a shop cat roaming freely.2 Its menu ran from breakfast to dinner at modest prices, and a tarot reader had recently started working there.2

Muzha station and a heart-shaped waffle

你後面 (Behind You Cafe) is a short walk from Muzha station, in an alley off Muzha Road Section 3.3 The space was once a photo studio, and it now has large windows, mixed industrial furniture and no time limit, as of 2020.2 The order is the heart-shaped mochi waffle, with banana chocolate, brown sugar pearl or a seasonal topping.2

Muxin Road and early mornings in Jingmei

自由·之丘 (CCIP & CAFE) is tucked down a narrow alley off Muxin Road Section 2.2 The owner and his younger brother renovated a former factory, filled it with old furniture and added an outdoor bar and wooden platform, used for occasional outdoor film screenings with a drink included.2

The Black Rose Cafe, in a lane off Roosevelt Road Section 5, is the early choice: 07:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends, with Wi-Fi, and it closes at 18:00 every day.
