Yonghe split from Zhonghe Township on April 1, 1958, and at about 36,800 residents per square kilometer as of July 2026 it is the most densely populated district in New Taipei.1 Zhonghe, with about 402,000 residents at the same count, ends the Zhonghe–Xinlu MRT line at Nanshijiao.6

The two districts are residential, and their cafés reflect it. A 2020 roundup of long-stay cafés ran from Shuiyuan Street in Yonghe to Jing'an Road in Zhonghe, with dumplings, waffles and lasagna on the menus.4 Two older threads run through the coffee as well: a painter's former home and the Japanese-era name of a bridge.12

Local tip: Check the day before heading to Bo'ai Street: the Yang San-lang museum and its café close on Monday and Tuesday.2
