Bang Kapi (บางกะปิ) dates to the reign of Rama III, when Chao Phraya Bodindecha brought settlers back from Champassak and Luang Prabang. Bang means a waterside hamlet; kapi may be shrimp paste, a poetic word for monkey, or kapiyoh, a cap worn by Muslim men.1 The old district was much larger, and Lat Phrao and Bueng Kum split off in 1989 and Wang Thonglang in 1997.1

Ramkhamhaeng (รามคำแหง) University, founded in 1971 as Thailand's first open-admissions university, has its main campus in the Hua Mak part of the district.12 The cafés here spread from the sois around it north along Lat Phrao Road, mostly small shops in residential lanes.

Local tip: For the canal boat, carry small notes for the fare collector and aim for a weekday, when service runs longer: weekend boats stop around 19:00.6

Getting there by monorail or canal boat

The MRT Yellow Line opened fully in July 2023, with 23 stations from Lat Phrao to Samrong, and runs 06:00 to midnight.345 It follows Lat Phrao Road through Lat Phrao 101, Bang Kapi and Yaek Lam Sali stations before turning down Srinagarindra to Hua Mak, where it connects with the Airport Rail Link.134

The slower route is the Khlong Saen Saep boat, running since 1990. The eastern line starts at Pratunam, where you change from the Golden Mount line, and stops at Ramkhamhaeng U, Mahadthai, Wat Klang, The Mall Bang Kapi and Bang Kapi before ending at Wat Sriboonruang.6 Fares were 15–25฿ as of April 2026, paid on board, and weekend boats stop around 19:00.67

Hua Mak and the Ramkhamhaeng sois

The university's main campus covers about 300 rai on Ramkhamhaeng Road, and the Ramkhamhaeng U pier sits opposite it.16 For an early start, ยูยะ ค๊อฟฟี่ on Ramkhamhaeng Road opens daily 06:00–17:00. Maison de Siri Cafe & Eatery and Tidnom are on Soi Ramkhamhaeng 24, in the lanes nearby.

Soi Ramkhamhaeng 40 has 14 Grams Caffeine Addict and Meaterian at 116 and One More Time Cafe in the Gallery Residence. Hua Mak Road has its own short run, with Kane T. and Bamboo De Cafe at 13 and V Luv Coffee at 29. Horm Cha, on Soi Ramkhamhaeng 52/2, opens daily 07:15–20:00.

Halal food stalls are prominent at the Ramkhamhaeng Night Market, and a halal weekend walking street runs near Hua Mak Stadium.1

Lat Phrao 101, Lat Phrao 130 and The Mall

The Mall Lifestore Bangkapi, at 3522 Lat Phrao Road, was renovated in 2022.1 GA/GA Attitude in a Cup is on its ground floor and Coffeelismco is up at the Jaymart on the third, and BNK48 Cafe is at Power Mall, 61 Lat Phrao Road.

West of the mall, Lat Phrao Soi 130 has the thickest run of cafés. Feel Good Cafe, at 390/1, opens daily 07:00–17:00, and Passion Coffee and VCafe are close by. On the main road, Khun Lai Cafe at 402 runs 08:00–18:30 and closes on Wednesdays, and Cafe Masscof at 257/3, near Lat Phrao 101, runs 07:30–17:30. Just north of the mall, Thanon Happy Land Sai 1 has เกษียณ Cafe' & Hashery at 84 and Sant'-Pang at 102.

Khlong Saen Saep and the northern edge

Khlong Saen Saep marks the district's boundary with Bueng Kum and Huai Khwang, and mosques stand along the water, among them Masjid Jamiul Islam.1 Rim Sansaap cafe' sits on the canalside path, and Slowbus is at the waterside on Krungthep Kreetha Soi 7.

North on Nawamin Road, Beluga Coff & Juice at 685/2 Nawamin 14 opens 07:00–18:00, and Hormchui Cafe on Nawamin 8 stays open until 23:00. Up in Bueng Kum, Davin Cafe, at 108 Khlong Lam Chiak Road, is an Italian-inspired place in steampunk fittings with specialty coffee and parking for more than 150 cars, open daily 08:30 to midnight.8 EP.1 COFFEE & ROASTERY, at 222 on the same road, opens Monday to Saturday, 08:00–18:00.
