Ratchadaphisek (รัชดาภิเษก) Road, named for the silver jubilee of King Bhumibol's reign, was conceived in 1971 and opened in 1976 as part of the inner ring.3 Huai Khwang (ห้วยขวาง), roughly "barricaded creek," was wetland crossed by canals before it became a district in 1973.1 Din Daeng (ดินแดง), "red soil," split off in 1993 and takes its name from a red dirt road built in the 1940s.2

The cafés here follow the roads off Ratchadaphisek rather than the avenue itself: Sutthisan to the north, Pracha Rat Bamphen and Pracha Uthit in the middle, Pracha Songkhro to the west, and Rama 9 to the south. The area ranks among the city's leaders for cafés open late, and it is level with Thonglor for specialty bars.

Local tip: Get off at Huai Khwang for dinner on Pracha Rat Bamphen and bring a translation app for the signs; Future Cafe on Ratchadaphisek is still open for coffee afterward, until 03:00.4
