Phra Khanong (พระโขนง) was once far larger: Khlong Toei and Prawet were carved out of it in 1989 and Bang Na in 1998. The name may come from a Khmer word for eyebrow or from khanon, a customhouse, since the area was long a gateway from the sea.1 Today the district has two sub-districts, Bang Chak and Phra Khanong Tai, and is home to an oil refinery.1

The cafés follow Sukhumvit Road east from Soi 48 past On Nut (อ่อนนุช) to Soi 101, with a second run along On Nut Road itself. They serve the condos and sois around them, so the choice is thick around On Nut and the Sukhumvit 90s and thins out toward Srinagarindra Road.

Local tip: Wat Mahabut expects covered shoulders and knees, so dress for the temple if you plan to pair it with a coffee on On Nut Soi 7.4

Mae Nak and Wat Mahabut

Thailand's famous ghost story belongs to this canal. In the common version, Nak dies in childbirth while her husband, Mak, is away at war, and lives with him as a ghost on his return; when he finds out and flees, a monk traps her spirit in a jar and sends it into the Phra Khanong canal. It has been filmed repeatedly, from 1959 to Pee Mak in 2013.2 Her shrine stands beside the canal at Wat Mahabut, off On Nut Road.2

Women come to pray for safe deliveries and for husbands in military service, and lottery players come too.4 Devotees tie colored cloth around a bo tree and release live fish into the canal.2 A 1997 boundary change moved the shrine into Suan Luang district, to some local dismay.1 Blue Mountain gives its address as the temple, on On Nut Soi 7, and It's coffee time and Bake Urban are on the same soi.

Further east, Fika & Co. is on Soi 62 and Smith's Café and Espresso Bar at 2108 Soi 62/1. Tiny Tree Garden pairs outdoor seats with air-conditioning and takes Tuesdays and Wednesdays off. So Vegan serves daily 11:00–20:00.

Wat Thammamongkhon's stupa, modeled on the Mahabodhi at Bodh Gaya, is lit at night and works as a landmark for the neighborhood.5

Out toward Srinagarindra

The MRT Yellow Line runs down Srinagarindra Road, with Suan Luang Rama IX and Si Udom stations on this side.7 Suan Luang Rama IX, the city's largest park at 500 rai (80 ha), opened on 1 December 1987.6 Mivana Organic Forest Coffee, at Premier Corporate Park off Srinagarindra, is forest-themed, set among tall trees and creeping vines, and an iced Thai-style coffee cost 110฿ as of January 2025.8 Part of Moon and Saffron Hill Cafe are in the sois nearby.
